News from the volunteer Coordinator

We have a couple opportunities to send out for options after the New Year.  Fill out the contact form below if you have any questions.

1) TRC is running a Parent Café in collaboration with The Grapevine, at GBS, on February 17th 2024 from 9am-11:30am. We are looking for one childcare volunteer who would be willing to watch children (probably age 8 and under) while the parents are in discussion. They would be with another childcare volunteer from The Grapevine, so not alone. Background check required (we can arrange for one if needed, sooner rather than later).

2) Our tax program will be running from the end of January through mid-April.  We are looking for Greeters (no tax experience required) and Tax Preparers (training provided via on-line IRS service and supported by The River Center).

Greeters: 
The VITA Greeter welcomes all taxpayers to the site, creating a pleasant and safe atmosphere. The Greeter provides taxpayers with intake forms and ensures they have brought all of the required documents to complete their tax returns. The Greeter also manages traffic and entry areas on-site to maintain the flow of taxpayers. The Greeter does not answer any tax law questions. No experience necessary, training provided and a passing score of 80% or more on the open-book Volunteer Standards of Conduct test is required. Commitment of at least 3 to 4 shifts of 3-4 hours each over the duration of the tax season from 1/27/24 to 4/15/24. One in-person training/meeting will take place before the start of the tax program.

Tax Preparers:
The VITA Tax Preparer interviews taxpayers using the IRS VITA intake form and provides high quality free tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers using online TaxSlayer software.  The VITA Tax Preparer ensures all eligible credits are claimed. All IRS VITA training requirements for the Tax Preparer role including Volunteer Standards of Conduct, Intake/Interview & Quality Review and tax law certification are required with a passing score of 80% or more on open book tests. No experience necessary. In-person and self-study training and materials provided. Weekly commitment preferred of at least one 3–4-hour shift, over the duration of the tax season from 1/27/24 to 4/15/24, but we can work with your schedule. Three in-person trainings and meetings will take place before the start of the tax program.

This program provides direct support to local families for whom paid tax preparation is a stretch.  It provides immediate support to local individuals and families - and is SO appreciated.
